The Secret Behind the Dirndl (traditional dress)

I get a lot of comments about the costume I wear in most of my Wiesn videos. This dress is called dirndl (pronounced like deer-n-del). It consists of three components: the blouse, the dress and an apron. Now, the apron’s bow actually holds a secret that most foreigners are unaware of.

The position of the apron’s hanger reveals some information. If the apron’s bow is on the right side (perspective of the wearer), it means that she is married or in a relationship. So better not flirt with her unless you want a beer glass to hit your head! The loop on the left signals their availability. Wearing the bow on the back could have several meanings: the woman is either a widow, or a waitress, or from Austria, where it is always tied on the back. Children also tied the bow at the back. Finally, the bow tied at the center front means that the woman is undecided or doesn’t want to reveal her relationship status.
