How to cook SPLIT PEA SOUP

This traditionally German Recipe for How to Cook Split Pea Soup could also be called a stew. It is not very liquid but if you prefer is more liquid, you can just add a little more chicken broth and add the potatoes like 10 minutes before the soup is ready. I, however, like my pea soup a little more mushy.

Pea Soup is inexpensive and easy to cook – perfect for beginners!

Ingredients

  • 250 g split or whole Peas
  • 1 leek
  • 200 g Celery Root
  • 2 carrots
  • 2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • 100 g bacon, cubed
  • 750 ml chicken broth
  • 250 g potatoes
  • 4 Wieners
  • some salt, pepper
  • some White Wine Vinegar

Instructions

  • Put the peas in a bowl and cover with water, let them soak over night.
  • The next day: Cut the leek into rings, the carrots, celery and the potatoes into cubes.
  • Heat the oil in a large pot and add the bacon.
  • Let the bacon fry for a few minutes, then add the Carrots, Leek and Celery Root.
  • Sautee for a few minutes, then add the Chicken Broth.
  • Remove the remaining water from the peas and add them to the pot.
  • Let cook for 45 minutes, stir inbetween and check that ther is enough liquid in the pot.
  • After 45 minutes, add the Potatoes and let them cook in there for 10-15 minutes, continue to stir frequently.
  • Slive the Wieners and add them to the soup at the end of the cooking time.
  • Spice with salt, pepper and vinegar.

Notes

Add more Brooth if needed.
